More Information

Retail barcode scanners are built to offer the ideal mix of features and affordability for retailers. These cabled scanners usually can read retail barcodes from near contact to a little over a foot away, making it easy for new employees and old pros to get quick scans. Available with a laser scanner or linear imager, a good retail barcode scanner will save you a lot of time at your checkstand.

Laser Barcode Scanners
Laser barcode scanners use a mirror or prism to spread a laser beam across your barcode. The amount of laser light reflected determines where bars and gaps are on the barcode and is how a laser barcode scanner decodes data. Often, laser scanners have some moving parts, making them slightly less durable than linear imagers. The Symbol LS2208 is one of the most popular and longest selling laser scanners on the market. For more aggressive scanning, the Honeywell Voyager 1202g can read incredibly dirty and damaged barcodes with ease.

Linear Imagers
Linear imagers use an LED to illuminate the barcode, then capture an image of the barcode to translate into data. Because they capture an image instead of measure reflection, linear imagers are generally better at reading damaged barcodes or scanning in really bright environments. For general retail scanning, the lightweight POS-X EVO Laser is a great and economical choice. The Opticon OPR 2001 offers a stylish aesthetic perfect for salons and boutiques. The Honeywell Hyperion 1300g combines incredibly aggressive scanning with a rugged body, great for rougher retail environments.
